My 22nd B-Day Weight-Loss Challenge

I think you set a realistic goal and that's a wise step forward. Some set goals that are too hard to accomplish in a short amount of time. When it's discovered that the goal can't be reached as quickly as first thought; discouragement sets in.

Keep everything simple and be happy with a slow weight loss...this isn't a race!
It's not who reaches the finish line first, but instead, that all who try, reach it.

Be encouraged! That positive attitude will keep you moving forward!

A few tips come to mind:

Some gym's have different trainers at different times that teach the same class -- find trainers you're comfortable with.

Everyone there was a first-timer at some point -- go and enjoy the class.

Start off with lighter weights til you get comfortable.

Do what's right and comfortable for you, don't worry about what the person beside you is doing.
